Gwangmyeong City Issues Emergency Alert: “Report Suspicious Individuals Immediately"

A man, presumed to be a civilian, breached a military base in Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi Province, after damaging a barbed-wire fence, prompting a joint manhunt by the military and police.
According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the incident occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. on June 13. A section of the perimeter fence around an ammunition battalion in Gwangmyeong was found damaged, and CCTV footage soon revealed an unidentified man entering the base.
When the base broadcast a warning over its PA system, the man reportedly fled the scene and disappeared from view.
Military officials believe the intrusion is unlikely to be related to espionage, citing earlier CCTV footage that showed the suspect collecting wild vegetables near the base.
The barbed-wire fence where the breach occurred is about 250 meters from the ammunition storage area. No signs of unauthorized access to the storage facility or missing ammunition have been detected so far. The military is working with police to trace the suspect’s movements and is also asking local residents for their cooperation.
At 11:52 a.m., the city of Gwangmyeong sent out an emergency disaster alert stating, “There has been a confirmed intrusion into a military facility. Please report any suspicious individuals to the nearest police station immediately.” The suspect was last seen wearing a gray cap, navy short-sleeved T-shirt, digital-patterned arm sleeves, black long pants, and carrying an eco-bag.
Military authorities are conducting additional inspections to strengthen security at protected zones and plan to implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
