Can AI Diagnose Your Illness? Gyeonggi Hospitals Adopt Medical AI Systems
New technology assists with cancer, dementia, and stroke detection — Pilot project runs until November.
(MHN Reporter Minseo Cho) Gyeonggi Province, located in South Korea, is accelerating the digital transformation of its public healthcare system by introducing advanced AI technologies.
On May 12th, the province announced the launch of a pilot project to implement the 'AI Diagnostic Assistance System' and the 'Medical Imaging AI Data Platform' at Suwon, Anseong, and Icheon Hospitals, which are part of the Gyeonggi Provincial Medical Center.
The AI Diagnostic Assistance System is integrated with the existing PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System), a technology used for storing and transmitting medical images like X-rays and MRIs. This new system aims to assist doctors in real-time image analysis for major diseases such as lung nodules, breast cancer, dementia, and stroke. By using solutions certified by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, it is expected to improve both the accuracy and speed of diagnoses.
The Medical Imaging AI Data Platform, on the other hand, is designed to collect and manage medical imaging data from the three hospitals, converting it into datasets suitable for AI learning. This initiative addresses a common challenge faced by medical AI companies—securing enough high-quality data for effective training.
The pilot project is being led by the Yusin C&C Consortium and will continue for about seven months, concluding in November 2025. Key participants include Yusin C&C, which specializes in PACS integration and data anonymization; Lunit, which provides AI diagnostic solutions for lung nodules and breast cancer; and Huray, known for its expertise in MRI analysis for brain diseases.
At the end of the project, Gyeonggi Province plans to hold a performance-sharing event to present the system's results and case studies of medical data utilization. Based on the pilot's outcomes, the province will evaluate the feasibility of expanding the project and reflect the findings in its future AI medical policies. Kim Ki-byeong, Head of the AI Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, stated that the project aims to fully implement AI in public healthcare settings, enhance the quality of medical services using AI, and strengthen the medical AI ecosystem.
